Reboot sequence for windows updates

We have enabled automatic updates on our farm, two WFEs, App and SQL vms but it has started to be a problem. We seem to have issues with the ServiceManagement db getting out of sync.
Therefore, we are going to switch to manual on the SQL vm . What is the best way to ensure a save reboot of the back end server? Stop services on the App VM? If so which ones and what if any is the restart sequence?

You might want to stop the Platform Cache service as well.
