Notification URL link directly to work item no matter the work item type

Currently the format of Notification URL link to the portal is in the format http://[Server Name]/[Work Item Type]/Edit/[Work Item Reference] which means the work item type needs to be understood to create the link in the notification.
This is more complicated when trying to build URL in the action log notification as although there is a parameter for Work Item Type for Service Requests the output of the parameter is "Service Request" rather than "ServiceRequest" which the link requires.
This has been bought up in a couple of discussions such as https://community.cireson.com/discussion/1334/url-link-directly-to-work-item and there are some workarounds suggested (Runbook, Class Extension, etc), however I'd be keen to be able specify a generic URL format - something like http://[Server Name]/WI/Edit/[Work Item Reference] and have it redirect to the appropriate URL with some magic in the back end making it much simper to configure something that should be straight forward.

Came across this problem as well and made a custom solution which I've now shared.
