How to set up Test Environment

Sam_NguyenSam_Nguyen Customer IT Monkey ✭

My organization has been using Cireson for a few years but never had a test environment set up. Now looking to carefully build and implement one, there's a plethora of information that gets confusing since our environment is quite large.

In particular, the video in How To: Set Up a SCSM Pre-Production/Staging Environment (cireson.com) appears to not exist anymore. It is the same vimeo link displayed below. https://vimeo.com/127307593

I learn the best visually - so am wondering if this video still exists somewhere? or perhaps you have more video resources I can look at?

Thanks Matt, I had that video opened as well.

I guess my question is - was there ever a 'high level' video in Vimeo or anywhere? Are there any other videos besides this 3 minute one?

The video Matt cites above was originally on Vimeo as well, but still entirely relevant. I would say this ultimately depends on your desired outcome.

    • Do you want a wholly new, separate environment, that is not connected whatsoever to your production instance? In this case, deploy SCSM as though it was being installed for the first time. New databases, new management servers, new management group name, etc.
    • Do you want something that closely mirrors your production environment? In that you maintain your CMDB as it exists in production, your Service Catalog, management packs, and customizations? The video above outlines this, in that you add an additional management server to your production environment, you take a backup of your production ServiceManager db, restore to a different SQL server in your environment, and then point that recently added management server at the new SQL Server/DB.

Thanks for pointing out the different ways to setup a test environment @Adam_Dzyacky. I don't think there are any other videos. Here is the Microsoft article about setting a lab environment with the steps spelled out: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/scsm/set-up-lab-with-production-data?view=sc-sm-2019
