SCSM Configuration Manager Connector compatibility

Microsoft recently announced that they are supporting the SCSM 2016 config manager connector with SCCM current branch (up to 1606).

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/servicemanager/2017/01/03/extending-the-support-of-platforms-for-sm-2016/

According to Microsoft documentation it appears that SCCM is not included in the System Center 2016 upgrade sequence as it was for 2012 R2. This suggests that a SCSM 2016 upgrade is no longer a prerequisite to upgrading SCCM to current branch.

If this is the case, then the question of supported configurations for the SCCM Connector arise. Is the SCSM 2012 R2 configuration manager connector supported when used against SCCM current branch?

Does anyone have an insight into this or experience of running this configuration... works great / had issues?

I think I just saw the answer in the release notes for SCSM 2012 R2 UR9:

System Center Configuration Manager 1511, 1602, and 1606 are supported in this Service Manager update for Configuration Manager Connectors.

Still, if anyone has any positive or negative experiences of this would be good to know :)

No trouble connecting from SCSM 2012 R2 UR9 to SCCM 1606.  No issues from SCSM 2016 either.  As long as they don't change the SCCM schema significantly, it should continue to work, but it is good to get the statement of support from Microsoft if you are doing this in your Production environment.
