Add Service Tag field to Hardware Assets

Some vendors (Dell and Cisco are two examples) have their own asset tag that is separate from the Asset tag assigned by an IT support team. In the case of Dell it is called a "Service Tag" and it is critical in identifying the hardware item to Dell for servicing.
Many other vendors have something similar so a generic field for Service Tag or Vendor Tag would be useful for many people.
Up vote this idea if you would like to see it in a future version of the Asset Management product.

Hi Brett - we use the Serial Number field to record the Dell Service Tag & the Asset Tag field to record any Asset numbers our Organisation has assigned to the assets. I wasn't aware that companies such as Dell had a Service Tag & a separate serial nunber field?

@Andrea_Bennet Agree with your comment here, @Brett_Moffett could you hook us up with some proof? Would be easy enough, however I was always under the impression that SN and Service Tag where the same for Dell. Thanks.

We use the serial number & asset tag similar to Andrea. From our Dell computer, we only use the Service tag and treat it as a serial. But Dell also uses an express service code. For example the Service tag is 1ST2345 and the express service code is 12345678901

With Dell products, the number in the 'Serial Number' field in the BOIS, that will get picked up into WMI and therefore SCCM is the Service Tag. So for all the purposes of Asset Management, it is the serial number. They just call it something different on the sticker on the unit. As far as I know, its also the number you need when you log a fault with Dell. @Jacques_Bijl, do you know what the express service code is needed for?

In my experience the express service code is only a numerical version of the service tag. The express service code can be typed into a telephone for call routing. More than two decades ago Dell had a serial and added the service tag as a short version. Later the serial and service tag merged and the express service code was introduced.
